THE BAY AREA WILDERNESS TRAINING MISSION:

Equitable access to outdoor experiences for BIPOC youth and low income youth

The Bay Area Wilderness Training envisions a generation of social and environmental leaders, inspired by positive and meaningful experiences in nature, who reflect the diversity of our local community.

Our Mission

The specific purpose of this corporation is to preserve and protect historic artifacts of Yosemite climbing, and to educate and raise public awareness about and interest in Yosemite climbing.

Our Vision

To preserve the history of climbing in Yosemite and spread awareness, promote local and visitor stewardship of our precious public lands, creating community through preservation and education.

A Brief History

The Yosemite Facelift was launched in 2003, by YCA Founder and President, Ken Yager, in Yosemite National Park (YNP). This annual collaboration between the YCA, YNP, and multiple partners and sponsors quickly became the nation’s most beloved volunteer cleanup.

How Did Send-A-Thon Start?

Send-A-Thon was started by Neela Greene. Neela is a thirteen year old passionate climber. She climbs at least three times a week with Team Touchstone. When she was four, her dad took her to the gym the first time and over the years it has become like a second home. The past year she has been participating in Camp Tawonga’s B’nai mitzvah program. In preparation for her Bat Mitzvah, she has to work for eighteen hours on a special ‘mitzvah’ (meaning good deed in hebrew) project. Since she spends so much time at the gym, she thought it would be a great place for her to do her mitzvah project.

“Personally, I love nature. From climbing outside at Indian Rock to taking hikes in Tilden park, I’ve had lots of joyful nature experiences. I think that it’s really important what BAWT and YCA are doing.”
